Victoria is located to the south of Buckingham Palace and St James's Park and stretches from Parliament Square to the river Thames to the south. Named after Victoria Station, which was opened in 1860, the area is generally regarded as being a little off pitch but nonetheless, Victoria offers a cheaper alternative to the prime West End office areas of Mayfair and St James's.
The area in the immediate vicinity of the station commands high office rents due to the good communications with the south east and south west suburbs and cities and the ease of recruiting staff from these areas.
Victoria Street comprises many large 60s and 70s office buildings (100,000 sq ft plus), many of which are occupied by Government departments and the streets are teaming with civil servants at lunchtimes. The office buildings around Parliament Square are popular with parliamentary lobbying groups and private offices of MPs due to its proximity to the Houses of Parliament and the fact that MPs usually need to be within the 'Division Bell' boundaries.
The office buildings located on the banks of the river Thames in the vicinity of the world famous Tate Britain Art Gallery offer breathtaking views, for example, Millbank Tower, where the Labour Party headquarters have been based for many years.
