Mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086, Kensington originated from Saxon settlements and both Churchill and Hitchcock chose to live in the area. Kensington Palace, Diana Princess of Wales' official home, overlooking Hyde Park, is the area's most famous landmark, along with The Royal Albert Hall and the world-famous shopping district of Kensington High Street.

With its commercial heart along Kensington High Street, this is a large district lying to the west of Chelsea, and some 2.8 miles west of Charing Cross.

The area is very popular with tourists, educational establishments and diplomatic types. The Gambia High Commission and The Embassy of Czech and Slovak are among the numerous consulates and embassies that choose to locate themselves in the district.

As an office location, Kensington is home to The Independent Newspapers, Virgin and EMI plus numerous smaller office occupiers. Kensington also boasts its own business Park, called Kensington Village, which provides over 1 million sq ft of office space in converted Victorian warehouses.
