This area was so named after the Clerk's Well and is located north of The City and south of Kings Cross.

Characterised by the numerous former warehouse buildings that are typically popular with 'creative-type' companies, who are attracted by the wooden floors and exposed brickwork and village like atmosphere of office locations such as Clerkenwell Green. This is a much cheaper location to occupy office space and studios here have attracted media companies out of the more expensive Soho and Noho office buildings.

Clerkenwell was an area populated by many workhouses in the mid-18th century, where orphans, unmarried women, the old and the mentally ill were required to work in return for food and a roof over their heads.

The area is also famous as the centre of London's silver, gold and jewellery trades, and Hatton Garden is known worldwide for its many jewellers, workshops, diamond dealers and traders.

In booming office market conditions, companies are forced into this district due to high rents and lack of supply elsewhere. The Guardian Newspaper is one of the highest profile Clerkenwell residents.

Total supply of office space has diminished since the 1990's property boom saw numerous Victorian warehouses converted into trendy loft-style apartments, buildings that would otherwise have been converted into office space.
